Game on 2013

Today is the 16th of January and like many people, I’m contemplating ways to improve myself and my life in 2013. Initially the standard resolutions: eat healthy, workout, save money, get out of debt, seemed to be the obvious choices. So, on the first of the year I mentally prepared myself to tackle the majority of these vague and undefined goals. But again, it’s the 16th of January and as of today most of my efforts have been uninspired at best. My gym membership card is as untouched as virgin snow (although my skis have managed to defile some of said snow,) my diet has improved marginally (most progress is made during the work week but I still find time to squeeze some gluttony in on the weekends,) and my bank account is still trying to recover from the fallout of the holiday season. My lackluster attempt at self-improvement has left me feeling disappointed and craving a resolution to physically and emotionally immerse myself in –which brings me to Tim’s Ten.

Over the past few years the Plinko chips that are my life have started to fall quite nicely into place. I have a kick ass girlfriend, live in an amazing city, have a great group of friends, and have even become what some may label fiscally responsible. The one chip that can’t seem to find its way into the big payout spot is my career. I am very thankful to have a job in these trying economic times, however, my current position located in cube land on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder is not what I had in mind. I mean if you enjoy sitting in a 3x3 ft grey square with the glorious fluorescent light raining down on you while you stare mind numbingly at a computer screen for eight hours a day, more power to you, but I’ve always dreamed of being one of the lucky few who actually loves their job. Not to sound too cliché, but I truly believe in the Confucius proverb that if you “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”  So, this blog is the beginning my quest to drop my job Plinko chip into that ever allusive $10,000 slot.

How will I accomplish this? I figured a good place to start would be to identify ten companies (hence the name Tim’s Ten) in the Denver/Boulder area whose product/cause/service I believe in. Once my list is completed, I will unabashedly commit myself to finding a position within these companies while sharing my stories through this website.

I must admit that this blog is fairly self-serving in that I’d like to use it as a way to be held accountable, receive encouragement, and make connections (I’m looking at anyone whose friend, mother, uncle, or third cousin works for any of the companies that make the list.) I would also like for the ‘Ten to serve as a place where others can come for encouragement, collaboration, and support. I know It’s not easy finding a job in today’s economy, so why do it alone.

I look forward to sharing my adventure, and would like to thank everyone in advance!

Check back tomorrow to see the first company to make the list.
