Company #2

The second company to make the “Ten” is Leisure Trends Group (LTG) out of Boulder. Making an appearance at #42 on Outside Magazine’s 2012 Best Places to work list[1] Leisure Trends Group is a market research firm that delves into all areas associated with outdoor fun.[2] In addition to working with some of the biggest companies in the outdoor recreation world LTG provides a casual and collaborative work environment.[3] It’s a company that, at least on the surface, seems like a perfect fit for me.

As always this is the part where I ask if anyone has any contacts relating to Leisure Trends Group? Any information, connection, or introduction is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[1] Outside online has become a one of my go to sources for finding companies that do interesting, and innovative work in areas that I find very appealing.
[2] Some Leisure Trends Group partners include; K2 Sports, The North Face and REI!

Friday!

This post has absolutely nothing to do with my search for a dream job, but as it's friday and I'm about to head up to Winter Park for the MLK weekend, I thought I'd share this sweet Salomon Freeski TV episode. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend. I know I will!

From Gunnison to Boulder

While participating in one of my favorite  "make it through the drudgingly boring work day" activities, checking the Steep and Cheap website[1], the Kelty Gunnison 2 tent popped up as the current steal. As I am currently in the market for a new tent, I decided to do some quick research to see if this tent was a good fit for me. Upon my initial examination of the Kelty website, I noticed a good deal of their products had won editor’s choice awards from various outdoor magazines. Trying fervently to acquire as much information as possible in the ten minutes remaining on the deal, I followed a few of the links to the editor’s choice articles and ascertained that the Kelty Gunnison 2 was a high functioning and quality tent. Ultimately the Gunnison was a bit too small for my needs, but I decided to keep researching Kelty’s online inventory just in case another deal came around.

Now I know this might not seem to have much to do with finding a new career opportunity, but the research I conducted after deciding not to pull the trigger on the Gunnison purchase lead me to Outside Magazine’s 2008 best places to work. Listed at number 10, Kelty was recognized for operating a 100% wind powered office, paying employees to test products, and organizing staff outings in the Rocky Mountains. Curiosity peaked[2] by Outside’s article I scoured The Kelty website for other interesting tidbits about the company. Turns out they outfitted climbers with backpacks on the first American ascent of the West Ridge of Mt. Everest in 1963, supplied National Geographic with packs for their expedition of Antarctica in 1966, and even produced a line of products with the Grateful Dead in 1996.[3] I mean, who wouldn't want to work for a company that has a history of manufacturing top of the line outdoor equipment, encourages employees to test their products in the Rocky Mountains, and operates with the environment in mind? I know I do, which is why I’m making Kelty the first addition to Tim’s Ten.

I had mentioned in my first post that Tim’s Ten is a fairly self serving blog. To that point, this is the part where I ask if anyone has any contacts relating to Kelty? Any information, connection, or introduction is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[1] For those not familiar with Steep and Cheap it’s an amazing website that runs a different outdoor gear special, with savings up to 75%, off every fifteen minutes.

Game on 2013

Today is the 16th of January and like many people, I’m contemplating ways to improve myself and my life in 2013. Initially the standard resolutions: eat healthy, workout, save money, get out of debt, seemed to be the obvious choices. So, on the first of the year I mentally prepared myself to tackle the majority of these vague and undefined goals. But again, it’s the 16th of January and as of today most of my efforts have been uninspired at best. My gym membership card is as untouched as virgin snow (although my skis have managed to defile some of said snow,) my diet has improved marginally (most progress is made during the work week but I still find time to squeeze some gluttony in on the weekends,) and my bank account is still trying to recover from the fallout of the holiday season. My lackluster attempt at self-improvement has left me feeling disappointed and craving a resolution to physically and emotionally immerse myself in –which brings me to Tim’s Ten.

Over the past few years the Plinko chips that are my life have started to fall quite nicely into place. I have a kick ass girlfriend, live in an amazing city, have a great group of friends, and have even become what some may label fiscally responsible. The one chip that can’t seem to find its way into the big payout spot is my career. I am very thankful to have a job in these trying economic times, however, my current position located in cube land on the lower rungs of the corporate ladder is not what I had in mind. I mean if you enjoy sitting in a 3x3 ft grey square with the glorious fluorescent light raining down on you while you stare mind numbingly at a computer screen for eight hours a day, more power to you, but I’ve always dreamed of being one of the lucky few who actually loves their job. Not to sound too cliché, but I truly believe in the Confucius proverb that if you “choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”  So, this blog is the beginning my quest to drop my job Plinko chip into that ever allusive $10,000 slot.

How will I accomplish this? I figured a good place to start would be to identify ten companies (hence the name Tim’s Ten) in the Denver/Boulder area whose product/cause/service I believe in. Once my list is completed, I will unabashedly commit myself to finding a position within these companies while sharing my stories through this website.

I must admit that this blog is fairly self-serving in that I’d like to use it as a way to be held accountable, receive encouragement, and make connections (I’m looking at anyone whose friend, mother, uncle, or third cousin works for any of the companies that make the list.) I would also like for the ‘Ten to serve as a place where others can come for encouragement, collaboration, and support. I know It’s not easy finding a job in today’s economy, so why do it alone.

I look forward to sharing my adventure, and would like to thank everyone in advance!

Check back tomorrow to see the first company to make the list.
